Located in the Children's Department on the first floor, the specially designed space for children from birth to age five features toys, books, and a parent resource collection featuring curated works on early childhood. As a Family Place Library, the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library offers the community a place for families with young children to relax, share books, learn new skills, and meet other families. Resources that emphasize emergent literacy, reading readiness, and parent education are available in a variety of formats (books, music, multimedia) for a variety of ages (babies, toddlers, preschoolers, parents, and caregivers).  As a child's first teacher, the library is here to help parents and caregivers in that role by providing access to the information they need.

In 2025 alone, the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library hosted 228 early education events for children five and under.  Over 9,000 people attended these events including Family Storytime, Music and Movement, Craft Fun, Family Games, plus visits from special presenters like Shelly McBubbles, Song Solutions, The Learning Zoo, Bright Star Theatre, and John O'Bryant's Family Magic Show.  At each of these events, Family Place Libraries principles guided and built the foundation for early learning opportunities.

We hope to see you discover new things and a love of reading here at George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library!
