Richard A. Tucker Memorial Library is the newest addition to Norfolk Public Libraries, in Hampton Roads Virginia - for now. The branch is named after Richard Allen Tucker, who was the first African American Principal in Norfolk. The library is built on the ground where a school named in Mr. Tucker's honor opened in 1943. Its Children's Library includes a 5,000 square foot outdoor classroom has been closed since the end of 2025, for a STEAM refresh and will reopen in Spring 2026 as the RMP Learning Garden. Tucker Library has a designated Kidzone with pretend play and manipulatives for growing children as well as a separate Playscape with soft play materials, designed for babies and toddlers to move and explore safely.
Our collection is expanding rapidly and now includes multi-lingual options and books and resources for all ages, interests, and abilities.
Tucker Library has a great deal of fun planning programming for our young patrons and their families, encouraging them to have fun, grow through imaginative play, create friendships and bonds with other families and staff. We take pride in helping them to develop lifelong learning skills through literacy, play and extracurricular education alongside Virginia SOL's. Our staff is always aware of the part we play in the community and look forward to creating and engaging in new experiences ahead!
