Family Place has formed an exciting new partnership with the National Center for Learning Disabilities revolving around their Get Ready to Read! (GRTR!) initiative. Family Place Training Institute

The four-day Family Place Training Institute provides theoretical grounding in family centered library services and practical training in the core components of Family Place. The Family Place Training Institute prepares participants to implement the initiative locally and provides a vehicle for librarians to share experiences and effective practices with other Family Place librarians throughout the United States. Topics covered include:

  • Serving families and children through partnerships
  • Infant brain development
  • Child development
  • Emergent literacy
  • Parent education
  • Space design
  • Collection development
  • The Parent/Child Workshop
  • Assets and needs Assessment
  • Community Outreach
  • Coalition building
  • Documentation & Evaluation

All participants receive a Training Manual, relevant articles and books, and practical materials and information to help implement the Family Place Libraries Initiative. Beyond the training, Family Place Libraries staff provide four years of technical assistance to all participating sites.

Upcoming Trainings

The Training Institute is held at the Middle Country Public Library, the national model for Family Place Libraries, in Centereach, NY (Long Island).
